ELEMENTS

This work depicts a large number of photographs taken in Tokyo before and after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, and photographs taken of the Tohoku region after the disaster. The photographs are composed to form a grid-like format. The photographs depict the changes that occur on the surface of the city due to natural and human activity. By mixing and placing all of the photographs on the same surface area, the artist tried to make an invisible connection between the individual fragments taken at different times and at different places. The concept behind “ELEMENTS” is the ambiguity of photography. In this work, the variations of the dimensions of the images, the numbering and the selection that composes the grid, the size of the work, placement, exhibition format and the margin of each image can be altered. All the elements can be adapted and the state of the work can be continuously altered depending on the exhibition space it is residing in. In the group exhibition: “hyper materiality on photo” held in 2015, the large scale piece “UNTITLED (ELEMENTS / WALL)”, composed of 336 photographs, was exhibited.
