VESSEL – XYZXY

“VESSEL – XYZXY” is a piece created in collaboration with Japanese sculptor Kohei Nawa and derives from the performance piece “VESSEL” by Nawa and French/Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet. The body as a receptacle is the concept behind “VESSEL” and it explores the ever-increasing ambiguity between material and data. In this work, the artist explores whether a reality exists wherein the body as vessel has been transformed into a digital image. Koyama makes minor adjustments to the data collected by the 3D scanner of the performer’s bodies. Also, adjustments are made to the angles, positions and lighting of the space that has been simulated by the 3D modeling software. The captured image of simulated data is then printed out and a handheld scanner is used to re-scan the image. The title ‘XYZXY’ refers to the coordinate axes of a two-dimensional image and three-dimensional space. In the group exhibition “Aichi Triennale 2016 Trans Dimension”, Koyama exhibited 18 pieces of 6.6-meters-long prints of this series.
