Polysemic Fundus

This work exists somewhere at the junction of three personal circumstances and interests. (1) Eye Function | My eye has congenital glaucoma. According to fundus examination, most of the nerves, especially in my left eye, are already non-functional, but visual field testing shows no areas that I cannot see at this time. My eye is partially not parsing light, but apparently the cognitive function is making up for that structural defect. I wonder how much difference there is between forming an image as a signal in the brain and perceiving that I can see. (2) The third rainbow | I have long been interested in the rainbow as an optical and retinal phenomenon produced by sunlight and water droplets in the air, and as a physical and retinal structure produced by ink droplets from a printing press. In this work, as the third rainbow, I use the rainbow-colored block noise generated by the DLP projector as a potential filter for seeing. (3) Frame and Hole | When an image is cut out of a circle, which is more intrinsically “image”: the cut-out image or the image that is left behind? When an image is projected onto a print with a hole in it, if its frame surface is filled with an image, is it outside the window or above the window?
The artist attempted to coexist in a single place the myriad of layers created by the eye and the frame, and the phenomena that appear in their individual manifestations.
