POLYSEMIC FUNDUS / SEOUL

When I revisited Seoul for the first time in about six years, what caught my eye was the sheer number and size of LED signage scattered throughout the city. Day and night, these signs constantly emitted information like vapor. Far too enormous to be considered mere advertisements, they seemed to coat the city’s surface in layers of information. The images surrounding us evoke our desires, and baseless envy and craving linger in the corners of our minds. From the surface of the city, enormous eyes, gentle gazes, and an intense stare are directed at us. “POLYSEMIC FUNDUS / SEOUL” is Koyama’s first work inspired by a foreign city. Through the layered use of photographic prints, prints with round holes like windows, circular fragments cut from these prints, and projected photographs that cover them all, the work seeks to generate new imagery. It aims to momentarily bring together in a single space the phenomena that emerge from the countless layers created by viewpoints and frames.
