PHYSICAL FOREST

This is a photography- and video piece which the artist made during the residency project “INSITU Fort Canning Hill”, a project reflecting on the history of British colonization and the Japanese military occupation that impacted the area of Fort Canning Hill. During his time there, he participated in activities called ‘body in space’, which involved tai-chi and voice training. This inspired him to photograph while purposefully controlling the movements of his body, whereby he would swing the camera up vertically and continually photograph the 11 ‘Heritage Trees’. In order to create a direct connection between the historical site and himself, the artist tried to experiment by leaving traces of his body movement in the photographs. He has created a video piece alongside this project titled: “PHYSICAL FOREST / FEED BACK” (Digital Video, 12’00”). It is a high speed slide show of “PHYSICAL FOREST” and was shown as an installation piece that was projected at Fort Canning Hill at night.
